I have felt my skin burn with acid-you cannot hurt me

Birthdays are the most happening thing in an individual’s life but what if someone makes it the worst nightmare? Horrifying! Isn’t it? But let me tell you, this is a true story, a journey of a girl who survived gracefully.

This was the day when Resham Khan was celebrating her 21st birthday with her cousin Jameel Muhktar in Beckton, east London, on 21 June. They were enjoying every bit of it but suddenly they were attacked by a man throwing acid through their car window. The pair endured life-changing burns.

As Resham began screaming in pain, her cousin, who was temporarily blinded, then mounted the pavement and crashed. Khan needed skin grafts to her face and body whilst Muhktar suffered wounds to his stomach, face, neck, ears, arms and back requiring extensive surgery. Muhktar described his clothes and shoes melting following the attack. The court was told the acid used was so strong it had melted the seats and dashboard. Mr. Muhktar lost hearing in one ear and suffered third degree burns to his head and body.

Ms Khan, who is a business student at Manchester Metropolitan University wrote an open letter describing her pain and what she felt, she said, her 21st birthday had been snatched from her in one of the most “painfully scarring ways” imaginable.

“My plans are in pieces; my pain is unbearable, and I write this letter in hospital whilst I patiently wait for the return of my face,” she wrote.

She said her main priority was to ensure she made a full recovery and make sure nobody else is forced to endure her “living nightmare”.

Ms Khan, who has outlined a list of five actions she wants to be taken to address the problem immediately, said: “I cannot sit back whilst others remain indoors in fear of this happening to them.

"This problem needs to be eliminated. I refuse to allow the country I grew up in to simply get used to corrosive substance attacks. The fear is real. The crime is real.

A wave of acid attacks has left some Muslim residents in east London scared to leave their homes in recent weeks.

Ms Khan said: “Street gangs are now using these life-changing substances instead of guns and knives. Why are acids the new street weapon? Because corrosive substances are readily available in-store and online for as little as £6.50 and the laws surrounding possession is loose.”

This incident was captured in the CCTV camera and Attacker John Tomlin was sentenced to 16 years on 20th April 2018 at Snaresbrook Crown Court after he pleaded guilty in October to two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Jameel, who is scarred for life, branded the thug "disgusting" and an "animal" following his sentencing.

He said: "The sentence isn't long enough, my life has finished, I'm in continuous pain, I can't sleep and I can't eat." “If this was in America he could have been given the death penalty. That’s what he deserves.”

After a terrible year, Resham Khan is back in her form and now she is much stronger but her 37-year-old cousin is still recovering after an induced coma. She recently shared a picture showing how gracefully she survived this battle. Let’s just hope that our government takes some strict action and it all stops for good.
